Have you ever opened a report or presentation and realised half the information is locked away in an image or graphic you can’t quite make sense of?
Maybe it’s a complicated chart, or a photo with crucial details, but no one thought to include a description.
Microsoft is working on something that could change that — and it’s great news for accessibility and productivity.
Introducing “Describe Image” in Windows 11
Microsoft is currently testing a new accessibility feature for Windows 11 called Describe Image, powered by local AI built directly into your PC.
Available on the new generation of Copilot+ PCs, Describe Image can instantly generate a detailed description of any image, chart, or graph displayed on your screen.
You’ll find it under the Click to Do menu. The first time you use it, your computer sets up the AI models it needs — after that, everything runs locally on your device. That means your images and data never leave your machine, keeping your information private and secure.
Currently, the feature is rolling out to Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel who are using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ devices. Microsoft has confirmed that AMD and Intel models will receive it soon too.
Why It Matters for Accessibility and Inclusion
At first glance, Describe Image might seem like a small update. But for someone with a visual impairment, it could be transformative.
Imagine a colleague being able to understand a complex graph instantly, without waiting for someone else to interpret it. Or an employee skimming a report who can get quick context from a set of images — no extra software or delays required.
Accessibility features like this aren’t just about meeting compliance standards such as the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 or the Equality Act 2010 . They’re about empowering people to work independently and inclusively.
When your team can access information easily:
- They collaborate more effectively.
- They work more efficiently.
- They feel genuinely included in the digital workplace.
And that’s good for everyone — individuals, teams, and the business as a whole.
Making Technology Work for Everyone
Windows 11 continues to evolve with small but meaningful updates that make technology more human-centred. Describe Image is another step towards a world where technology adapts to people, not the other way around.
If your organisation is already exploring Copilot+ PCs, this feature is one more reason to be excited about what’s coming next.
