Microsoft Edge Launches Advanced Scam Protection Tool

Have you ever been confronted with one of those alarming pop-ups warning that your computer is infected?

You know the type: flashing red alerts, urgent messages, and a fake phone number urging you to “call Microsoft support.” These are not genuine warnings — they’re scareware, designed to trick you into handing over money or giving cybercriminals access to your device.

Even the most cautious users can fall victim, which is why Microsoft is stepping up its defences in a big way.

AI-Powered Scam Protection in Edge

Microsoft has introduced a new scam protection feature in its Edge browser that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and block these fake alerts before they reach your screen. This update is part of Microsoft’s ongoing mission to make Edge one of the most secure browsers for both Windows and Mac users.

The feature, known as the Scareware Blocker, is enabled by default on most newer devices. It employs an advanced AI model capable of recognising full-screen scam pages — those that falsely claim your device is infected or that urgent action is needed. Once identified, the malicious page is blocked immediately, preventing accidental clicks on harmful links.

Smarter Protection Through Collective Learning

Edge’s protection doesn’t just defend you individually. When a user reports a scam, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen uses that data to block the same scam for other users — sometimes hours or even days before it appears on global threat lists. In internal testing, a single user report prevented approximately 50 other people from being targeted.

Additionally, Edge now includes a scareware sensor, which can detect new scams in real time. Importantly, this feature works without sending your personal data or screenshots to Microsoft. While it is currently switched off, Microsoft plans to enable it automatically for users with SmartScreen activated.

Why This Matters for Businesses

Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are now a common target. Cybercriminals exploit even a single employee’s mistake to gain access to sensitive information. Consequences range from stolen passwords and drained bank accounts to full-scale ransomware attacks.

AI-driven tools like Edge’s new scam protection can react faster than any human ever could, helping to reduce risks and protect your team while they focus on real work.

Stay Protected

If your business uses Microsoft Edge, ensure you are running the latest version to take advantage of these protections.

And if you’re unsure how resilient your systems are against scams, it might be time to conduct a cyber security risk assessment. Regular assessments can help identify vulnerabilities, strengthen defences, and reduce the risk of costly breaches.
